First Grade Students Explore Characters and Setting
Students in Mrs. Egan’s first grade class at High Point Elementary have enjoyed their introduction to story elements by reading lots of fun children’s literature! To teach about characters, Mrs. Egan read aloud several Kevin Henkes books. During the week, the students re-created many of the mouse characters, talked about problem and solution, and learned how to retell the story in their journals. For setting, Jan Brett was the author of choice. The students started the day by guessing which setting was going to be the focus with a “setting bag” introduction. Throughout the day they explored the Jan Brett books and created their own setting picture books. In addition, they wrote about it in their journals and filled in story maps. Students ended the week by working in cooperative groups to create setting dioramas for each book they read!
