Students in all grades enjoyed moving and playing instruments to fun Autumn songs during the first few days of fall. Those In pictures are Mrs. Lewis 1st grade using scarves to dance to Vivaldi’s “Autumn” and 3rd graders playing instruments to celebrate Autumn is finally here!

HPES got Talent! So proud of our students who represented HPES at the Washington CO. Fair during the WCS talent show. Songs for talents were "Man in the Mirror" and "Never Enough." So proud of these HP students sharing their amazing talent at the fair! Way to go!
And then came the BIG moment… 🥧🏈😂To celebrate our students’ love of reading, the students in grades 1–5 who had read the most words earned the ultimate reward — PIEING A FOOTBALL PLAYER IN THE FACE! 🎉🥧 The smiles, laughter, and excitement were priceless!

Cardio Drumming PTO Night at HPES. Thank you to all our families, staff, and students for a great night of rhythms, music, and drumming. Our 4th graders have been working hard to come together for a wonderful energy packed show. A big thank you to WCS board for providing our schools with music and to Mrs. Lester, HPES music teacher for the lessons and creativity!
HPES Fourth grade students became geographers in their exploration of Virginia during the first few weeks of school. They used this knowledge to create a clay model of Virginia as they collaborated to combine their VA Studies and Art knowledge. Their clay models included key features of the five regions and the four major rivers. It was a wonderful way to put their new knowledge into practice.
Banjo the Service Dog made a visit to the Library with his owner Mr. Barns.
Mr. Barnes talked to the students about how having a service dog helps him, and some of the rules that apply to a service dog.
He also read the students a book he and his wife Dr. Barnes wrote about their journey.

On Thursday 3rd graders went to Conservation Camp held at Sugar Hollow Park for Washington Co students. As you can tell by these photos these kids had a really good time learning about nature and a few reptiles.
Today was a special day at High Point Elementary! 🐝💚💛 Our first student got to choose a book from our brand-new book vending machine! What an exciting way to celebrate the joy of reading! 📖💫

Second Grade Classroom Project: Our Community Helpers
Our second-grade students have been learning about communities and the important people who help make our communities strong and successful. Students explored different community helpers and learned about the important contributions each person makes to our community.
Each student chose a community helper that interested them. They researched and learned about their helper’s job, responsibilities, and contributions to the community. To demonstrate their learning, students created a craft representing their chosen community helper.
Through this project, students learned that every community helper has an important role and that people in different careers work together to help, protect, educate, and serve others in our community.

Second grade students in classroom guidance are learning ways to improve when they're learning a new skill and ways to keep going when they make a mistake or face a challenge. The 1st 9 weeks unit of study in guidance is growth mindset and goal setting. Second graders identified a skill they’d like to get better at, created a piece of art depicting that skill and will make a plan to improve in that area. Students practice identifying and changing unhelpful thoughts ('I can't do this') into helpful thoughts ('I can't do it yet!').
Why it matters: research shows children who learn these skills are more likely to make positive choices, experience greater well‑being, and contribute to a better school environment.

Mrs. Woodby's Math class had a fabulous time making a bus cookie using different shapes! The students practiced identifying and counting sides and vertices while following our recipe. It was a hands-on way to build shape knowledge, use our creativity and fine motor skills, and follow directions---all while enjoying a tasty treat!
First grade spent the week reading about everyone’s favorite big red dog, Clifford! The students covered comprehension skills, story elements, and positive character attributes! They wrapped up the week wearing red in celebration of Clifford the Big Red Dog! 🐾❤️

We had a special guest in PE on Tuesday! Coach Ben Jones from Bristol Sportsplex visited High Point and worked with students in all grade levels, introducing them to tennis skills and fundamentals.
Our 1st graders from Mrs. Lewis and Mrs. Woodby's class focused on ball control and learned the basics of a forehand stroke:

🎾 Swing from low to high
🎾 Make contact with the ball out in front
They did a fantastic job listening, learning, and putting their new skills into action!.

studying the alphabet, learning to name the letters and sounds,
and how to write our names. We enjoyed the book Chicka Chicka
Boom Boom by Bill Martin Jr. and John Archambault, which is
about the letters of the alphabet climbing up the coconut tree. We
completed a variety of activities, including making name hats.

Counting is more fun with fruit loops! 🌈 Our Kindergarteners in Mrs. St John's class practiced counting with this hands on activity!

Our preschoolers have been busy building more than just puzzles and block towers! They’re learning how to work together, share materials, problem-solve, take turns, and strengthen those fine motor muscles along the way.
So much learning happens when little hands and big imaginations work together!
